The ending really is a challenge for Hollywood. If the standard Hollywood formula is (1) setup, (2) good guys hunted by bad guys, (3) good guys hunting bad guys, then The War of the Worlds has no idea how to do act 3. Even Spielberg, with all his experience, seemed a little lost at the end of the movie. I thought the movie started well, but sort of went downhill from there. I still love the book though.
I liked it as an action movie, but it really wasn't much of a good sci-fi movie. The entire film is basically a glorified chase sequence with a deus ex machina ending. The movie is very similar to "Signs" in a lot of ways, but the latter is a lot better in my opinion.

doesn't spielberg always foul up his dystopic endings. I'm thinking AI in particular. Haven't seen it. Don't plan to.
