The final battle of the 4 years war
After countless meetings with my principal and other officials, a week ago from tomorrow I partook in a meeting with my former principal and the Superintendent of the Vestavia Hills City School Board. Just me and them. The meeting was held after I wrote yet another scathing e-mail to each school board member. If you'd like to view the horribly written, yet punctual e-mail I'd be more than willing to forward you a copy. I've been battling this thing since 9th grade and they still continue to use it.
We talked of how the school is not allowed to use the confederate flag as a symbol. In the e-mail I basically called my principal and adminstration liars and cowards. I came with my former spanish teacher to have another adult in the room so if it ever came down to it, it's not my word against theirs. The cowards said that since they weren't prepared for anyone but me and family members that they could not come to the meeting the teacher and new WISE club president. The spanish teacher was simply going to listen.
Throughout the entire meeting she was very patronizing. Talking of how she admired my "willingness to stand up for what I believe in." She went on to say I didn't have to allow you to start your own club. I didn't have to do this that and the other. The meeting sort of fizzled out into legalities about how it was never officially approved by the school board yet it's been on our school crest among other insignia since it's inception and continues to be. But it was never official. I eventually became fed up and just said yes yes yes and got out of there as quickly as possible.
Overally I feel as though I made somewhat of a difference although I still feel as though I could've done more and plan to attempt to take my story to news station or paper or something. My tass professor asked to use my story in a professors journal thing. So hopefully something more will happen. As I said in my e-mail and I will tell you guys, My main focus was for education, for the students and faculty to realize why the school board said no. The superintendent responded with no it never was and the school board never took a stance although they did agree to make some kind of announcement during clubs or morning announcements or something and I guess that is a step in the right direction.
I'd like to conclude this post by thanking you all. With out a doubt there is no way I could have done this without having met you guys and with your support. After discussing it with Masha and Greg I knew that, to be cliche "The power is mine"(reference to Captain Planet). But all those conversations I had with you guys really meant effected me. I was thinking of you guys when walking into the meeting. thanks

you should make everyone to whom you're sending a copy write a 1 page letter of support for you to pass along to the school board.
