Greetings from Sunny Ithaca

Well, everybody, the weather has finally turned the corner. After some morning frost this last week, we're probably going to have plenty of warmth until next winter. It's also been delightfully sunny out.

I had typed out a paragraph on my various frustrations with tonight's housemeeting, but decided I didn't want it on a public forum. If you're curious, give me a call. Same number as in the memory book.

Other than distractions like tonight, I've been doing quite well. I'm taking some really hard math classes (probably the hardest undergrad class along with one of the easier grad classes) as part of a schedule which includes a combined grad/undergrad seminar in Comparative Literature. The latter is a Jonathan Culler production on the topic of Derrida and Literature, and I've been thoroughly enjoying it, and been doing very well in it, to boot. I was chosen as one of a handful of students to give a lecture on May 10, so send me an e-mail (mjb245@cornell.edu) if you a) want to proofread a draft or b) want a polished version once it's done. Gayatri Spivak (former Tellurider; had one of the inset quotes in something we read in CUII, among many claims to fame) came to CU recently and Culler introduced me. It was almost as cool as meeting Judith Butler, and I think I actually enjoyed the Spivak's lecture more than Butler's.

I had a performance today with a brass quartet I formed of math majors from the CU wind ensemble. It was a fun show, as a part of the Math Department Spring Concert. The Wind Ensemble is performing this coming Saturday. This week will be crazy, but after that (and my Derrida paper) everything grinds to a halt pretty quickly. I'll be playing with the wind ensemble for graduation, and killing a lot of free time in between my last final (mid May) and the start of my summer research job (mid June). Mostly, I plan to read and knit, although I really should get out on my bike and suchforth.

Toodles,
Michael
