Goodbye Fredrick Fennell
1) Ben started the eulogizing dead composer/conductor thing, so don't blame me.
2) Fredrick Fennell, founder of the modern wind ensemble and acclaimed director of the Eastman wind ensemble, died yesterday. He revolutionized the way band music is played and has been credited with one of the top fifty recordings in the history of recorded music. On a personal note, my band is playing a march he edited and I personally witnessed him conduct his last concert series at the University of Minnesota just weeks ago. During the thunderous closing applause, he turned toward the audience, raised a hand, and spoke:
"Unfortunately, we have not prepared an encore. Thank you."
