He's a dead German conductor. Not really a big deal to most people except my dad who has every known Furtwaengler recording, a picture of him conducting on the wall, another picture of him with a copy of a signiture, and who in honor of the occasion listened to Furtwaengler's second or third syphony (he did some pretty good composing but I'm not sure which it was) when he got home from work.
Anyway, I find my dad really funny (totally obsessive but with an insane memory, which allows him to be even more obsessive) and thought I would share, though I also do enjoy Furtwaengler and feel a certain duty to spread the word as he is arguably the greatest conductor ever but also associated in history with the Nazis (also debatable), at an unfortunate cost to his reputation. On that note, there is a play called TAKING SIDES (which I have never seen or read) about his story during WWII, a movie based on the play with Ed Harris (who does not play Furtwaengler and which apparently doesn't use Furtwaengler's music which is dumb and which I have also never seen), as well as a book that I bought during TASP called THE FURTWAENGLER RECORD which includes a biography and a discussion of all of his recordings.
Now I believe I have satisfactorally explained a weird phenomena that dramatically affects me, so that Paul can have an idea of my life even if he does ignore me. This really is a big deal in the Morris family, so just letting you know.
And if anyone has any interest, I number myself among those who consider Furtwaengler the best ever, so check him out (?). And if you are REALLY interested, I invite you to visit and ask my dad about it.
