Day of the Dead
I went to an interesting presentation today about a horrifying situation in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Some of you have probably heard about the situation in this city located only 2 miles from El Paso, Texas, but I'll pass it on for the rest of you. Apparently, about 400 women and girls (mostly teenagers) have been brutally tortured and murdered there since 1990, and another 400 are missing. The terrible thing about it is that the government refuses to do anything about it, making many suspect that some powerful person(s) are responsible. It's truly insane, especially since numerous foreign and independent groups (including the FBI) have helped to investigate the murders, but their findings are ignored. Ever since these crimes have started, and been ignored, murders of women have actually risen throughout Mexico.
You guys can visit the site, send a petition to Mexico if you think that's useful. It's so hard to know what to do in situations like this; it's so easy to feel impotent. Maybe, if we just keep telling people, our words will take the power to effect change. Maybe.
