squirrels
Before school started, I thought it was really silly for people to obsess about the squirrels on campus the way that they do. For those of you who don't know, we even have shirts, continuing the "where fun comes to die" legacy, that say, "where the squirrels are cuter than the girls" and "where the squirrels are more aggressive than the guys." When I saw those during prospy weekend, I just groaned; I couldn't beleive that I was going to a school that found so much pleasure in self-deprecation.
I realize now how wrong I was. These squirrels are intense. I suppose they're generally bold creatures, but for some reason, something about the main quad makes them particularly forward. I've become somewhat -- no, completely obsessed with them. This morning, I was enrapt by a squirrel sitting perfectly still in a small tree, staring at who knows what. It was amazing. I saw a bunch of green and blue parrots in a tree near my dorm today, but even they just didn't do it for me like the squirrels. Hyde Park does strange things to a body, I suppose...

The squirrels here, too, they're so...unafraid and confident. I've gotten within arms' length of one before, and it kept nibbling on its acorn like I didn't exist.
