Miscellany

It is a nice day in New Haven, the kind that makes you think that winter isn't all that bad. The temperature will probably fall ten degrees or more when the sun goes down, the type of drop that makes me happy to know that in two weeks Spring Break will spring. I will spend it sunning in a village outside Santo Domingo. The group I am traveling with will be doing a variety of humanitarian activities with a Haitian migrant community. I will be on the team taking oral history. This task is somewhat daunting, and I imagine myself failing (in some way or another) to do justice to
what these people have lived through.
I think it would be cool if we all posted something interesting, a nugget from our lives that might be of interest. Mine: I think I will major in Comparative Literature, though my Anthropology class is changing my life, the way I think about culture, the way I observe. It is called "Peoples and Cultures of Latin America", which makes it sound really elementary and survey-like, but it is actually quite captivating. My favorite topic we have talked about is the idea of "the other" developed by natives as a response to visiting missionaries and scholars. Yes.

What do you guys think of Ancient Greek? Imagine reading "Symposium" or "Iliad" in the original. Maybe I'll try to do this. Who knows. We should all see each other again. Soon, preferably.

hoping February finds you well,
josh

We need to do some rendezvous thing. I might be roadtripping to some TASPlicant interviews over spring break, but I'll almost certainly be in NYC for a day or two.
