Black History Week?
Again at my ignorant ass school of Vestavia Hills High School. The administration last year put up signs that said black history week. I don't know who did it or why but what do you guys think i should do. I really would like to do something for black history MONTH because our school never does but what? hmmmmm I dunno but my head is getting bushy again. What do your high schools do to recognize Black History Month/week?

This is going to start to sound sad in a couple sentences. The librarian (white, irish) meets with a handful of the more motivated African Americans at the school (while we have many first and second generation Africans, they rarely get involved with this particular event). Those students are in charge of planning events which usually include educational posters (and by "educational" I mean "-cough- -grimace- "educational"") and an assembly. Last year's assembly was replete with student rap, student r&b, student hip hop dancing, student break dancing, and a lively student harlem shake (if you were thinking otherwise, "student" does not imply audience participation). The event reminded me more of a minstrel show than a cultural appreciation event, but hey, they planned it. Some teachers, especially in English and History, make a special effort to highlight black leaders in their respective fields as well.
Good luck with whatever happens.
