Why, oh, why the symbolism?
Before I came to TASP I had my hair cut. As a result, I arrived in Ithaca with my hair really short and pretty ugly. Then, I allowed my hair to grow for six weeks - a long enough time for it to be messy without being "different".
When I arrived home, for another week I kept what I'd grown at TASP. Today, I had it cut. (This was more out of necessity, as I'm about to leave home again, this time for a barbarian region with no barbers within walking distance.) It's making me sad, this act of beginning to lose what I've grown. May I lose nothing else.
Yours,
DJ
P.S.: Josh, I'm really pleasantly surprised that I'm not the only one who walks into furniture stores not intending to buy anything. (see previous post)
P.P.S.: watching the Olympics opening ceremonies last night, it was funny to hear Bob Costas and Katie Couric arguing over who would get to say the word "Djibouti".
P.P.P.S.: I thought Ithaca was rainy, but NYC has been way worse over the past few days. The lightning two days ago - there was a really bad thunderstorm - sounded like antiaircraft fire. More importantly, the rain reminded me of Ithaca.
Love you all!

Worst Flame Cauldron in recent history. The spend all that money on the early part of the ceremony and then skimp on the one thing which people will remember. Barcelona is still number 1.
Missed it by about an hour.
Ah, the glory of petty pseudo-national-primitivism. Note how the developed countries shirked traditional garb in favor of promoting local industries. I'm thinking particularly (since I got back from the baseball game near the end of the march) of the US and Greek teams (what was with the leather purses?!). At least the Bermudans didn't wear shorts (I think,...I missed that part). Nothing like the undeveloped world volunteering to make a spectacle of their backwardness in front of a screaming audience of first-world nationalists.
Even the NY Times magazine's attempted refutation of the faux-Greek-ism reeked of sentimental humanism. I am, of course, thoroughly disappointed.
